Coil cleaner for the outdoor unit
A gentle rinse keeps the outdoor unit of a central air system clear of leaves, grass clippings and dust.
Find the right fit
- Model number. Start with the outdoor unit model label, on the side of the unit, and its manual. Some manuals say what kind of cleaner to use.
- Part number. Then the cleaner itself: one labeled for outdoor coils (the outside surface of the unit that air passes through), used the way its label says.
- Two or more retailers. Look the model or part number up at two or more retailers. Buy the one listed as a fit for your model, and check the printed size or part number on the box matches.
What to look for
- Turn the power off first, at the outdoor disconnect or at the thermostat. The outdoor disconnect is the small power box on the wall near the unit.
- Use a garden hose on a gentle spray.
- Follow the cleaner label for how long to wait and whether to rinse.
When to swap
Once a year, in spring before the cooling season.
