How to find the right fit for the things the home hunt and the Reminder Tool remind you about: model number first, then part number, then a check at two or more retailers.

- 1-inch furnace filters: A 1-inch filter slides into a slot on the furnace (or on the indoor fan unit some homes have instead), or sits behind a large vent cover on a wall or ceiling.
- 4-inch media filters: A 4-inch media filter is a thick filter, about 4 inches deep, that sits in a cabinet beside the furnace.
- Fridge water and ice filters: The fridge water and ice filter sits inside the fridge or behind the grille at the bottom.
- Furnace humidifier pads: The pad sits behind the cover of the humidifier, a box on the large metal air pipes of the furnace.
- Water softener salt: The salt goes in the tall tank beside the softener.
- Whole-house water filter cartridges: The cartridge sits in a canister, called the housing, on the main water line, often just after the main shutoff valve.
- Air purifier filters: The filter sits behind the front or back cover of the purifier.
- Other cartridges: drinking water, pool and spa: Under-sink drinking water systems (often called RO, short for reverse osmosis), pool and spa filters and other setups take cartridges on their own schedule.
- Smoke and CO alarms: Smoke alarms go in each bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level.
- UV bulbs: Some furnaces and water systems use a UV (ultraviolet) light bulb that wears out on a schedule.
- Coil cleaner for the outdoor unit: A gentle rinse keeps the outdoor unit of a central air system clear of leaves, grass clippings and dust.
