Water softener salt
The salt goes in the tall tank beside the softener. Check it monthly and add salt when it drops below half.
Find the right fit
- Model number. Start with the softener model label or manual. It says which kind of salt the softener takes.
- Part number. Then the kind: pellets (small pressed nuggets) or crystals (loose chunks), as the manual calls for. Note the kind and bag size you buy so the next trip is quick.
- Two or more retailers. Look the model or part number up at two or more retailers. Buy the one listed as a fit for your model, and check the printed size or part number on the box matches.
What to look for
- Salt labeled high purity leaves less buildup in the tank.
- Skip rock salt unless your manual allows it.
- Store the bags dry and up off the floor.
- If the salt forms a hard crust on top, break it up gently with a broom handle.
When to swap
Check monthly; add salt when the tank is below half.
